The Cushion (Der Polster)

1902
20th century
285 x 260 mm (11.2 x 10.2 in.)

Max Kurzweil, Austrian, (1867–1916)

Alternative title: Martha Kurzweil Seated on a Divan
Object Type: print
Medium and Support: Color woodcut printed in yellow, green, brown, blue, and black inks on Asian paper
Print impression quality: Good
Edition: From edition published in “Jahresmappe der Gesellschaft für vervielfältigende Kunst,” 1903. Presumably removed from original brown paper mount of edition prior to entry into DAC collection. This print was previously described as being outside the Jahresmappe edition, but based on comparison with an impression from the edition on the original mount (Catherine Burns collection), the DAC impression does appear to be from the Jahresmappe edition. It is printed on the same Japanese paper as the editioned piece. The distance from top edge of sheet to image is approximately 28 mm, which would have allowed for removal from the mount by tearing along top edge. Comparison impression was folded under approximately 28–29 mm from image at top, and adhered to mount at underlying folded section (C. Rogan 5/2/2007).
Bibliography: Fritz Novotny and Adolf Hubert, Max Kurzweil, ein Maler der Weiner Sezession (Vienna, 1969), cat. no. 428.
Credit Line: Purchase funds, 1968
Accession Number: 1968.25.3
